BROTHERHOOD AND FREEDOM
OF THE ROAD
The
The WindWalkers MC was formed around the fall of 1981 by a self proclaimed biker and cowboy, Rod Kelly and some of his
close motorcycle riding friends. Of course they had to go and meet with the powers that be in Georgia for permission and permission was granted. The original WindWalkers MC was in Rockmart, Ga. The clubhouse was at Rod's place in an old barn. Some of the original members had names such as Colonel and Skydiver. The Rockmart chapter always celebrated their anniversary the first Saturday in October. Eventually the cowboy part of Rod took over the biker and Rod relocated to Utah to follow his cowboy dream. Before Rod left a chapter in Griffin was started.
The Griffin chapter came about due to a lot of Harley riders in the Griffin area that frequented the Bike Barn in Griffin, the
Pinecrest bar and Lee J's bar in Barnsville knowing each other and getting together for rides on weekends. Several of those rides
took these folks to parties in Rockmart at the WindWalkers clubhouse. Rod and his fellow members were impressed by the turnout
from the Griffin area and good relationship of the riders. He approached several of the folks from the Griffin area after their
anniversary in 1986 about starting a chapter in Griffin. These folks attended several meetings with the Rockmart chapter between
November of 1986 and May of 1987 and were given 2 half sets of patches to start a chapter in Griffin. Riders who had been to the
Rockmart parties and other riders were invited to a Griffin locale about becoming members if a Griffin chapter was formed. Of the
turnout, 18 riders decided to probate in the newly formed group along with the 2 who had been given the half sets of patches. Of
the folks that had been going to Rockmart about starting a chapter in Griffin, Warden was voted the first President and David was
voted the first Secratary/Treasurer. The others who had not been going to the meetings in Rockmart had to probate for the next
6 months. The Griffin chapter also had to meet with the powers that be in Georgia to start a Griffin chapter and permission was
granted. Meanwhile an accidental fire burned down the Pinecrest bar. As the newly formed chapter did not have a clubhouse,
they initially rented a motel room at the motel that was next door to Lee J's bar. It was about 1 year after the Griffin chapter was
formed that Rod, who was the President of the Rockmart chapter decided to get remarried and move out west. Leslie was voted
the next President of the Rockmart chapter. Both chapters attended each others functions for several years. About that time the
Rockmart chapter lost several members and disbanded their chapter. The Griffin chapter also lost a lot of it's first members in those
early years but retained enough members to continue on. There are still active members who started the Griffin chapter and 2
of them will be celebrating their 20 years in the club in June of 2007. Both chapters have been highly visible in putting on charity
benefits for people or families in need. The Griffin chapter just had it's 16th Toy Run which is always held the first Saturday
after Thanksgiving. The Griffin chapter always celebrates it's anniversary the first Saturday after Father's day. The club had charity
benifits and club parties at the clubhouse once a month from April through October, usually the 3rd or 4th Saturday of those months.
