BROTHERHOOD AND FREEDOM
OF THE ROAD
The
In June of 1981 Franklin McDowell, Alan Dyer, David and Chris Mollock, James and Hershell Crowley and myself thought about starting a club. I had some experience with clubs in Virginia while I was in the Navy. I knew what it took to start a club. First we needed a club house. We had one behind Frank's house, Franks shop. I think it's still standing. All this started in Cedartown. One thing I knew was we had to meet with the powers that be. One day at the shop Rod Kelley popped up. Don't know how he heard about us, but he did. He told us he knew the powers that be. So Rod was in. We made Rod president. Rod brought Butch Cato and a few of other people from Rockmart in to the club. J.O. Davidson was one of them that rode on a daily basis. Lee Garrett lived on his bike. J.O. and Lee were good solid members, always wanting to ride. One day a Navy buddy showed up at my apartment. That would be Dennis "Shrubbs" Griffitts from Alabama. He was all for this. He also rode everyday he had to, that’s all he had. Alan had been working on colors, he knew club life. After many a draft he came up with something close to what is now the patch. The bull’s skull came from the Eagle's album. Alan, he toned it down a little bit, tuned it some and came up with what you have now. Rod's son said something about a wheel, the thirteen spokes, I don't know, maybe Alan saw something, he's good. The patch got voted in everyone loved it, except Rod. Rods son came up with Windwalkers name, that was cool as hell the day he said that name, we voted on it, everyone loved it, except Rod. Got me, I don't know. If Rod didn't think of it first, or he didn't like it, he had a problem with it. The folks from Cedartown started seeing this, started leaving. Shrubbs and I moved the club to Rockmart. I think the club roster at this time, Rod was president, Butch Cato was vice president., myself, Dennis Griffitts, J.O.Davidson, Lee Garrett, Larry McDonald, Larry Brogden, Ken Shannon, Joe Easy, Mike Sartin, David Dover and Dennis Petty. I left in October of 1983. I'm so glad to see the colors still flying, does my heart good.

The Griffin chapter came about due to a lot of Harley riders in the Griffin area that frequented the Bike Barn in Griffin, the
Pinecrest bar and Lee J's bar in Barnsville knowing each other and getting together for rides on weekends. Several of those rides took these folks to parties in Rockmart at the WindWalkers clubhouse. Rod and his fellow members were impressed by the turnout from the Griffin area and good relationship of the riders. He approached several of the folks from the Griffin area after their anniversary in 1986 about starting a chapter in Griffin. These folks attended several meetings with the Rockmart chapter between November of 1986 and May of 1987 and were given 2 half sets of patches to start a chapter in Griffin. Riders who had been to the Rockmart parties and other riders were invited to a Griffin locale about becoming members if a Griffin chapter was formed. Of the turnout, 18 riders decided to probate in the newly formed group along with the 2 who had been given the half sets of patches. Of the folks that had been going to Rockmart about starting a chapter in Griffin, Warden was voted the first President and David was voted the first Secratary/Treasurer. The others who had not been going to the meetings in Rockmart had to probate for the next 6 months. The Griffin chapter also had to meet with the powers that be in Georgia to start a Griffin chapter and permission was granted. Meanwhile an accidental fire burned down the Pinecrest bar. As the newly formed chapter did not have a clubhouse, they initially rented a motel room at the motel that was next door to Lee J's bar. It was about 1 year after the Griffin chapter was formed that Rod, who was the President of the Rockmart chapter decided to get remarried and move out west. Leslie was voted the next President of the Rockmart chapter. Both chapters attended each others functions for several years. About that time the Rockmart chapter lost several members and disbanded their chapter. The Griffin chapter also lost a lot of its first members in those early years but retained enough members to continue on. There are still active members who started the Griffin chapter and 2 of them will be celebrating 23 years in the club in June of 2010. Both chapters have been highly visible in putting on charity benefits for people or families in need. The Griffin chapter just had it’s 19th Toy Run which is always held the first Saturday after Thanksgiving. The Griffin chapter always celebrates it’s anniversary the first Saturday after Father's day. The club had charity benefits and club parties at the clubhouse once a month from April through October, usually the 3rd or 4th Saturday of those months.
